TOYOTA FV2 CONCEPT – The Car of the Future

Presented at Tokyo Motor Show 2013 under the tag name of “The Car of the Future”, this new TOYOTA FV2 CONCEPT seems to be a descendant of the Tron Light Bike from the movie Tron.  The name “FV2” is an abbreviation of Fun Vehicle while “2” stands for Second Generation. It is a more advanced version of the Toyota Fun-Vii concept car displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2011.

The makers of the car say: “Interact with the car, talk with the car, the car you can instinctively bond with”. TOYOTA FV2 is entirely different from conventional vehicles. It can only occupy one person, with no steering wheel, brake or clutch pedals inside the driving chamber. A canopy encloses the driver’s compartment giving the feel of a cockpit.  The four wheels on the FV2 are arranged in a diamond shape, with one at the front, one at the back, and one on each side of the driver.

Now, how is one supposed to drive this vehicle, without a steering wheel? This is where innovators have made TOYOTA FV2 to stand out. It’s a car you can communicate with your intuition. The vehicle connects with driver’s body, allowing him/her to move the vehicle left/right, forward/backward by shifting his/her body weight. Toyota envisions a driver-vehicle relationship similar to that of a rider might have with a horse i-e connecting with the driver’s heart. The new TOYOTA FV2 allows the driver and vehicle to grow as partners through direct intuitive communication between them. The vehicle uses voice and image recognition to determine the driver’s mood and suggests destinations as a co-pilot that enables a better driving experience. The body color of TOYOTA FV2 can be changed freely. It has a function called Illumination, which displays emotions and messages on its body creating a more intimate relationship with the driver.

The driver can drive FV2 while sitting or standing with an augmented reality display windshield upfront.  The FV2 incorporates ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) technology to connect with other vehicles in the area and traffic infrastructure, hence supporting safe driving by providing advance warnings about vehicles in blind spots at intersections and other safety information.
