Meet Lovot: A companion robot that will follow you around to give hugs

Robots are helping humankind in industries as well as in homes. Apart from their industrial utilization, more and more robots are being used as toys. Further dissecting into the category of robot toys,  the demand for companion robots have seen a surge in recent times as more and more people are turning towards robots to combat loneliness. Keeping that in view, Japan has moved one step further in entertaining and comforting humankind. This invention is known as Lovot, and it is a product of Groove X Company. The company claims that this robot is made to be loved.

This loving robot has a set of sensors that sense the gestures and brain impulses to make the owner happy. The robot rolls around and looks to give a hug to its owner. It took three years to construct this robot. It weighs approximately 3 to 5 kg or 6.6 to 8.8 lb. and has dimensions of 10 x 17 x 10 inches (255 x 430 x 255 mm). It features a primary 4-core x 86 processor with 8 GB of RAM, and dual processors of 4-core and 2-core ARM with 4 GB of RAM providing excellent assistance in performance. The manufacturer claims that this loving robot uses the machine language to respond to the actions of the users, in real time scenarios. The little antenna on its head has a sensor which collects and assembles all of the data in a useful manner.

It also comes with multiple cameras. It includes a thermal camera and a wide-angle camera. The primary sensors include light sensors, humidity sensors, pressure sensors, and heat sensors. It also comes with touch sensors covering all of its body. The body also consists of four microphones, two LCDs for eyes and a moveable neck. The Lovot can move around as it has moveable, drivable and retractable wheels. The Bluetooth, wireless LAN, and mobile network connectivity are built-in facilities. It also has an integrated battery of Li-ion battery that allows the Lovot to move.

The robot is available for pre-order now and is set to be released at the end of 2019. It will be sold as a pair for an estimated price of US$5,400 (JPY 598,000), and the single unit will be available for US$3,100 (JPY 349,000).
